Over 400+ marketers attended Social Media Week Austin on February 20-22, 2019. Social Media Week is a premier conference and industry news platform for professionals in media, marketing and tech. I had the honor of attending the ATX conference.
In this post, I will be sharing 4 critical takeaways from SMWATX and tips on how you can start implementing these into your strategy right away.
The conference kicked off with the opening keynote, “The State of Social Media 2019,” by Claire Winslow of Best Practice Media. A year ago, the biggest scandal concerning social media was that Facebook announced they planned to prioritized content from friends over content from brands and publishers. Flash forward to a couple of months later when the news broke out that Cambridge Analytica was using users data from Facebook quizzes. Trust is at an all-time low between the audience and social media. One of the biggest takeaways from the keynote was about responsibility. Who is responsible for data protection? WE ARE! Who is the one responsible for content, WE ARE! We are the ones responsible for the content we share, produce, and put out into this world. We need to be transparent with every action on social media.
What does that mean for you: Transparency builds trust. Once mutual trust is established, customers will be more open to providing feedback. Encourage them to frequently post in your online community and share their experiences with fellow customers. What others say about a company is seen as more valuable and credible than what a company says about itself.
The theme of the whole conference was storytelling. On Social Media, we have the power to connect with our audience through storytelling. People want to learn more about your brand and storytelling is the perfect way to get intimate with your audience.
What does that mean for you? Speaker Lyn Graft shared these great tips.
3 Storytelling Areas to focus on
1. Build a story foundation- The reason why you started your business in the first place, Different types of stories, brand stories, origin story, customer story, Multimedia for all the different ways to share your media
2. Personalize your Story – “No one has your story, and that is your power.”
3. Positioning & Differentiation. – Find out what makes you unique and different.
While storytelling may have been the theme of Social Media Week Austin, Authenticity was surely the secondary theme. In every session, each speaker was talking about why it is important to be authentic with your audience. The world is starving for authenticity.
What does that mean for you? Tug on Emotion. Emotion solidifies memory. Whenever we are creating something, it is important to remember that emotion is powerful.
“The Fomo is real! If it isn’t on social media, did it happen?” – Tisha Holman
A great Social Media strategy conveys FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Whether you’re hosting an event or a product or service, expressing FOMO is critical to any marketer.
What does that mean for you: Speaker Tisha Holman says to use the 3E’s strategy: Excite, Engage, Elevate.
