How many of you have seen an Instagram post where almost every word has a hashtag. For example, hashtag dinner, hashtag special, hashtag this is the longest hashtag ever. Even Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon made fun of the way people use hashtags.

Hashtags are important when it comes to using social media. Hashtags provide an easy way to search for content, and they give us the ability to track conversations about our brand and our products. They also help us keep an eye on what’s going on in our industry. When I started to put hashtag strategies into place, I not only saw an increase in followers, but the bulk of my clients had said they found me on Instagram, because of hashtags. If you want an increase too, here are some dos and don’ts for you.

Do put your hashtags in a separate comment after you post. This allows your caption to flow and doesn’t distract your audience’s eyes. Why do you want for a potential client to see all the hashtags you use right?

Don’t put the “&” symbol. This will break your hashtag. Here’s what you could do instead: #SBGAndYelpSA

Do your research. You can use up to 30 hashtags on Instagram. And two on Twitter to get effective results Look to see what top hashtags are trending in your industry. The key is to get your picture seen and noticed in the hashtag feed. Go with hashtags that fit best with your overall goals. Some of my favorites include #ThatsDarling #ABMLifeIsColorful #SavvyBusinessOwners and #CommunityOverCompeition.

Don’t hashtag every word! Don’t be that person that hashtags every little single word. Again look to see what popular influencers are using so you can reach your ideal audience.
