According to Kevin Systrom, CEO & Co-Founder of Instagram, over 700 million people now use Instagram every month! That means, Instagram is a platform you should be using to market your business online.
One of the leading questions I get from clients is how should they market effectively on Instagram. We all know the top three: 1. Have a cohesive, aesthetically pleasing feed. 2. Research relevant hashtags for your industry. 3. Use Instagram stories. But what if I told you there are MORE hacks to skyrocket your account? Today, I’m sharing my top Instagram hacks for increasing engagement!
1. Writing out longer captions
Instagram is now becoming a form of microblogging. More and more popular Instagram users are sharing a longer form of writing out captions to connect with their audience. The explanation on why more extended captions are becoming popular, can be found in this NYMag.com article. Click here to check it out!
2. Adding a Geotag to your photo + stories
Found an awesome restaurant, coffee shop, or a hip wall? Add the location to your picture! By adding your location, this will drive more people that are interested in the same location to your photo. One of the recent Instagram updates includes Geotagging within your Instagram Story. When you add the place to your story, you have the chance to be featured in your cities main story. By doing this, it will help to increase your reach!
3. Research relevant hashtags
In my blog post, “Dos and Dont’s of Hashtags,” I explained how hashtags are important when it comes to using social media. Hashtags provide an easy way to search for content, and they give us the ability to track conversations about our brand and our products. They also help us keep an eye on what’s going on in our industry. One of the things brands do wrong on Instagram is they hashtag every word. Hashtagging “#food” will NOT get your post seen because in that hashtag search there are over 222,392,585 posts. If you’re in a local setting, for example, San Antonio, you could do “#SAFoodie” which only has 56,034 posts. While there’s still a grand number of post in #SAFoodie, the hashtag is tailored to your local setting and gathers all the posts together from local influencers in your city.

4. Including Call-to-Actions
The best way to get people to engage with your content is by including a call-to-action.
Here are some examples of call-to-actions you can use in your caption:
- Ask your audience to answer a question
- Ask your audience to tag another account in the comments section
- Ask your audience to click the link in your bio to visit your blog/website
- Ask your audience to check out your IG Story and reply back to you
- Ask your audience to follow you on other social media platforms
5. Joining a Comment Pod
An Instagram Comment Pod is one of the newest trends for breaking the new Instagram Algorithm. You start with a couple of members in a Instagram direct message. The members of the pod engage with the content of others in their pod as soon as the post goes live. 6. Cross promoting your accounts
